Screw Clamp Terminal Board Overview

A screw clamp terminal board uses a captive clamping screw to drive a pressure plate or saddle clamp that grips the conductor against a fixed current bar. Tightening the screw with a standard flat-blade or cross-head screwdriver creates a gas-tight, vibration-resistant connection that has been the backbone of industrial wiring for over a century.

  • Q: What is the correct tightening torque for screw clamp terminals?
  • A: The required torque depends on screw size and is specified in the terminal's datasheet per IEC 60999. As a general guide: M2.5 screws require 0.4–0.5 N·m; M3 requires 0.5–0.8 N·m; M4 requires 0.8–1.2 N·m; M6 requires 2.0–3.0 N·m. Always use a calibrated torque screwdriver for safety-critical installations and record the torque value in your panel documentation.
  • Q: Do I need to use wire ferrules (end sleeves) with screw clamp terminals?
  • A: Ferrules are strongly recommended for stranded wire to prevent individual strands from fanning out and creating a short circuit to adjacent terminals. They also improve contact quality and make re-termination easier. However, our saddle-clamp design can accept un-ferrulated stranded wire in a pinch, unlike some spring-clamp designs that strictly require ferrules.
  • Q: How does a screw clamp terminal compare to a spring clamp terminal?
  • A: Screw clamp terminals require a screwdriver to connect and disconnect wires, but they can handle larger wire sizes, higher currents, and are easier to re-tighten if vibration loosens the connection over time. Spring clamp terminals are faster to wire (tool-free push-in) and maintain constant contact pressure, but typically max out at smaller wire sizes. For permanent, high-current, or safety-critical connections, screw clamp is generally preferred.
  • Q: Can your screw clamp terminal boards be used with aluminium conductors?
  • A: Standard screw clamp terminals with tin-plated copper current bars are not recommended for aluminium conductors without anti-oxidant compound, because aluminium oxide forms rapidly on the conductor surface and increases contact resistance. For aluminium conductors, specify our AL-rated terminal variant with a bimetallic current bar and anti-oxidant grease pre-applied at the factory.
