Custom Prototype CNC Part

-- Steady & Reliable Manufacturer --

Introduction

A prototype CNC part is a physical representation of a design, machined in the target material (or a representative substitute) before committing to production tooling or high-volume manufacturing. CNC machining is uniquely well-suited for prototyping because it requires no molds, dies, or fixtures beyond a simple workholding setup — which means a designer can go from an approved CAD file to a functional part in hand in as little as 3 working days.

Fenglan supports product development teams at every stage: early proof-of-concept prototypes (where speed is everything), engineering validation prototypes (where the part must perform exactly as the production version will), and pre-production pilot runs (where the focus shifts to process repeatability). We accept quantities from 1 piece upward, in any of the materials we stock, and provide full dimensional inspection reports so design teams have the data they need to release for production with confidence.

Our rapid-quoting process delivers a price and DFM feedback within 24 hours for most parts — simply upload your STEP file and 2D drawing to get started.

Applications

  • Design Validation (DV): Verify that a new part's geometry, weight, and fit match the CAD model before tooling investment — catching expensive design errors early.
  • Functional Testing: Pressure-test valve prototypes, load-test structural brackets, and run-in prototype shafts in real assembly environments before finalizing drawings.
  • Trade Show & Sales Samples: High-quality finished prototypes that look and feel like production parts for customer demonstrations and investor presentations.
  • Bridge Production: When tooling lead times are long, CNC prototypes can fill customer orders while the production tooling is being built.
  • Legacy Part Reverse Engineering: Worn or obsolete parts are measured, redrawn, and a replacement prototype is machined to verify fit before batch production.
  • Multi-Iteration Development: Teams that use rapid iteration loops — design, prototype, test, redesign — rely on fast CNC prototyping to compress development timelines from months to weeks.

Advantages

  • No Tooling Cost: Unlike injection molding or die casting, CNC prototyping requires no upfront mold investment. Total cost for a single prototype is just material, machining time, and setup — often <$200 for simple aluminum parts.
  • True Material Properties: Prototypes machined from the same alloy as the production part provide accurate mechanical, thermal, and electrical test data — unlike 3D-printed polymer surrogates.
  • Fast Iteration: A design change can be incorporated into a revised prototype within 24–48 hours of drawing update, supporting weekly design-test cycles.
  • Production-Representative Finish: CNC prototype surface finishes, anodize colors, and plating thicknesses can match production specifications exactly, making samples suitable for customer approvals.
  • DFM Feedback Included: Our engineers review every prototype drawing for features that may be difficult or costly to produce at volume and provide written DFM recommendations before machining starts — at no extra charge.
  • Seamless Transition to Production: Because we use the same machines, materials, and processes for prototypes and production, scaling up is a smooth handoff rather than a re-qualification exercise.
